The Basics:
Overall Rating: 4.9/5
Price per night / Discounts: $26 / None
Campground website: Gunter Hill Campground
Our Site #: 53
Privacy Rating (how spacious and private do the sites feel):
5/5: Sites here are huge and have lots of space between them. What's more, most of the sites have been carved into the existing forest, so there's plenty of plant life between you and your neighbors. Other sites are pulls offs and may have less tree coverage, but there's so much space between the sites, you'll almost never feel cramped. We really can't say enough about the brilliant layout of this campground.
Location Rating (accessibility to points of interest or to major highways):
4.5/5: This campground is located just 10 miles west of Interstate 65 which runs N/S through Alabama. The interstate passes right through Mongomery, so you're close to the city as well. While the campground feels world's away, you'll have everything you could need within a reasonable distance.
Site Quality and Big Rig Accessibility Rating (utilities and accessibility of campground hook ups):
5/5: Note - there are two loops here. The Catoma Loop features paved sites, full hook ups, and is clearly new. The Antioch loop is older, more rustic, has unpaved sites, and only offers water/electric. They are both nice, but if you're looking for the full set up, make sure you book in the Catoma Loop. As for the sites themselves, they are all level, long, and the utilities work perfectly.
Technology and Customer Service Rating (online resources, reservations, campground wifi, and staff):
5/5: Book your own site on Recreation.gov + friendly and efficient check in = Perfect.
Overall Value Rating (the overall value of the campground; was it overpriced for what it was?):
5/5: One of the nicest campgrounds we've been to, with full hook ups, excellent spacing, and proximity to a major city - all for the bargain basement price of $26 per night. Awesome!
Summary:
This campground is everything we wish others would be. Spacious, private, well thought out, and convenient, And, for $26 per night, it's an absolute steal. If you're heading up or down I-65, this is a fabulous park to stop at for a couple days.
